Dear Sanborn parents,
On Thursday, March 29th at the Memorial Hall Library, from 7:PM to 8:30PM
the Andover Rotary, together with the Andover Public Schools are presenting
a free lecture and discussion entitled " The Bully, The Victim, and the
Bystander". The lecture and discussion will help us to find ways to guide
children and young adults to deal with many of the situations that lead of
bullying and help us to learn how we can help to prevent bullying
situations from escalating.
The affects of bullying on children are often long lasting-low
self-esteem and depression, and those doing the bullying may go on to engage
in more destructive, antisocial behaviors as teens and adults. In 2003 The
Massachusetts Legislature amended Section 1 of Chapter 71 of the general
laws in order to provide a learning environment in our schools that is safe,
and free of bullying and is conducive to the learning process. Each public
school district is now developing and implementing a safe school plan.
The feature presenter, educator and social worker, Rick Irving, will
discuss steps that parents can take to help their child or teenager, deal
with bullying and recognize the role of the bully, victim and bystander, in
perpetuating this destructive behavior. In addition to his direct work with
children and families, Rick has 30 years teaching and counseling experience
in the Andover school system. He presents many workshops and has been a
keynote speaker at conferences in Massachusetts and overseas including
conferences in Nice, Rome, Madrid, Birmingham and Stockholm. He has also
consulted to schools in Brussels, Amsterdam, The Hague, Madrid and Rome.
Join the Rotary Club of Andover and the Andover Public Schools for a lively
and informative discussion on " The Bully, The Victim, and the Bystander"
on March 29th at Memorial Hall Library.
