The Sanborn Weekly ~ October 2, 2007

FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE

October is Here!

It is hard to believe that September has come to an end! As I walk
through the building and visit classrooms it is clear that the teachers
have established daily routines and the children appear to be settling
in nicely. Thank you all for the many ways that you have made me feel
welcome. Sanborn is truly a wonderful school community!

The School Store is Open for Business

Staffed by members of the Student Council, the School Store has recently
opened for business. Kindergartners and first graders may visit the
store on Mondays after their lunch. On Wednesdays, second and third
graders may shop after their lunch. Fourth and fifth graders have an
opportunity to go to the store after lunch on Fridays. All items at the
store are $1.00 or less.

Red Sox Spirit Day

All Sanborn students and staff are invited to join the members of the
Student Council Pep Club this Friday, October 5 in showing your Red Sox
Spirit. As you know, October 5 is the second game of the series against
Los Angeles. Children are encouraged to wear Red Sox shirts or other
team clothing or to simply wear red, white, and blue as we cheer on our
home team.

Cafeteria Updates

The children seem to be adjusting to our automated payment system, Meal
Magic. We did have longer lines for a few days last week, but hopefully
will get back to normal as the children learn their pin numbers. As you
know, each Friday is Pizza Day. This is a very popular lunch with the
children and the lines tend to be longer on Fridays. Wednesdays and
Fridays have traditionally been Ice Cream Days. When the children
purchase ice cream they need to get back in line to put their pin in a
second time. With our new system, and pizza and ice cream on the same
day, the children are spending longer than we would like standing in
line. Beginning next week, Ice Cream Days will be Tuesdays and
Thursdays. Hopefully this change will allow all of the children plenty
of time to eat before heading out for recess.

Sanborn Parent Discussion Meeting

Susan Hunter-Jones, Sanborn Adjustment Counselor, will host this year's
first Parent Discussion Meeting on Friday, October 26th, from 8:30 -
10:00 A.M. Parents will view and discuss Dr. Robert Brooks's video,
"Look What You've Done! Stories of Hope and Resilience", which offers
practical strategies for helping children develop the confidence and
resiliency they need to succeed.

Upcoming Parent to Parent Talk

Deadly Persuasion: What Advertisers Really Sell Our Kids

Dr. Jean Kilbourne is internationally recognized for her pioneering
work on alcohol and tobacco advertising and the image of women in
advertising. She is a frequent guest on radio and television programs
including "Oprah" and the "Today" show. Dr. Kilbourne will discuss the
hidden truths behind manipulative marketing and its detrimental effect
on students and parents. We encourage middle and high school students,
as well as parents, to attend this phenomenal presentation. Jean
Kilbourne, Ed.D, will speak on October 4 from 7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Andover High School, Collins Center. For more information on Dr.
Kilbourne, visit www.jeankilbourne.com
