THE SANBORN WEEKLY ~ October 16, 2007

FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE

Early Release Day on October 24

Next Wednesday, October 24 is an Early Release Day for Staff
Development. All children will be dismissed before lunch, at 11:45 A.M.

Literacy Volunteers

At our Back-to-School Nights in September, Sanborn Reading Specialist
Mrs. Linda Meltzer spoke to parents about the Merrimack Valley Jewish
Coalition for Literacy. Thank you to those of you who have come forward
to volunteer your time with this initiative. We are seeking a few more
volunteers who could give an hour each week to read one-on-one with a
child. If you are interested, please call the school office or contact
Mrs. Meltzer directly at lmelzter at aps1.net.

Principal Wang to Visit Andover

During the week of October 28, Mr. Wang Biao, Principal of the Beijing
Dongfang Decai School, will spend a week in Andover learning about
American education. The Dongfang Decai School, which was founded in
1958, has over 3000 students in grades 1 through 12, and over 300
teachers.

Principal Wang's visit is arranged through The China Exchange
Initiative. The purpose of CEI is to facilitate educational exchanges
between schools in this country and China. On Monday, October 29,
Principal Wang will spent part of the morning at Sanborn School. We are
looking forward to his visit!

Coats for Kids

The Sanborn Student Council in collaboration with Anton's Cleaners is
sponsoring "Coats for KIDS". We are seeking donations of quality winter
coats for babies, children, and adults. Coats will be cleaned by
Anton's Cleaners and distributed by community agencies to those in need.
Donations may be brought to the Sanborn School foyer anytime through
January 15.

Sanborn Parent Discussion Meeting

Susan Hunter-Jones, Sanborn Adjustment Counselor, will host this year's
first Parent Discussion Meeting on Friday, October 26th, from 8:30 -
10:00 A.M. Parents will view and discuss Dr. Robert Brooks's video,
"Look What You've Done! Stories of Hope and Resilience", which offers
practical strategies for helping children develop the confidence and
resiliency they need to succeed.

October School Meeting

Each month, all of the Sanborn children and staff gather for a monthly
school meeting. At our October School Meeting which was held last week,
Student Council Members put on a terrific skit on the Four R's ~
Respect, Responsibility, Resourcefulness, and Reflection. Also,
together we recited the Pledge of Allegiance, recognized those with
September and October birthdays, and concluded the meeting with the
Sanborn School Song.

Arrival and Dismissal Reminders

For morning drop-off, parents are to enter the horseshoe driveway in
front of the building and park along the right curb. For safety
reasons, no driver should double park or leave a car parked in the front
loop. If you need to come into the school, please park in the lot on
the side of the school. Children should always enter and exit cars from
the curbside. They should not cross the horseshoe driveway to
enter/exit a car. Parents are asked to say good-byes to children before
the children enter the playground. This way, staff members on duty know
that all of the adults on the playground are there to provide
supervision and are not concerned about whether there are "strangers" on
the playground.

If your child will be going home from school in a way that varies from
his/her normal routine, please send a note to the classroom teacher. If
you are picking up your child, it is important that you get in the
carpool line on the playground side of the school. We have had a couple
of instances where parents have parked in the parking lot and children
have run into the parking lot to get to their cars, creating an unsafe
situation.
