FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE
No Parking on Alonesos Way
The Andover Police Department has contacted me regarding complaints from
residents on Alonesos Way. The issue is 4 to 5 cars are parking on
Alonesos Way for afternoon pickup. Alonesos Way, which is narrow to
begin with, is now even narrower due to the snow banks. About 100 feet
down the road there is a bend with a short "line-of-sight." So, as
vehicles are trying to pass the parked cars, there is no way to tell if
there is on-coming traffic. In collaboration with the Andover Police
Department, I am requesting that parents do not wait for their children
on Alonesos Way and use the "regular" parent pick-up locations.
Other Traffic Reminders
Those of you who drive your children to school in the morning have
likely noticed that, at times, the traffic is backing up onto Lovejoy
Road. Please remember that the front circle is for live drop off only.
There is no parking allowed. For safety reasons, children should exit
cars on the right side only. If you need to accompany your child into
the building, kindly park in the parking lot. Also, if you are picking
up in the afternoon, unless you are coming in to the office to dismiss
your child, please get in the carpool line.
Geography Bee
Congratulations to fifth grader Caroline Hartel, Sanborn's winner in the
National Geography Bee. We are also pleased to announce that fourth
grader Oliver Gorham was Sanborn's runner-up. Thanks to all who
participated.
School Improvement Council Survey
By Friday of this week, all parents will receive, via ListServ, a link
to a survey developed by the Sanborn School Improvement Council. In
addition to looking at school services, the survey will include
information on and seek feedback on Expanded Learning Time (ELT). As
most of you are aware, Sanborn is one of six Andover schools awarded an
ELT Planning grant from the Department of Education. We hope you will
all respond to the survey and have your ideas heard. We will soon be
forming an ELT study group at Sanborn. Parents who would be willing to
participate on the study group should express interest by email to
pbarrett at aps1.net.

Kindergarten Change-over
The date for the kindergarten change-over is Monday, January 28. Those
children currently attending the morning session will switch to
afternoon on that date. Afternoon kindergarten hours are 12:15 - 2:45

Workshop: Yelling Doesn't Work!
What you can do to help a child comply at home and the classroom using
positive behavior supports. Yelling does not teach the necessary skills
the child needs to learn in order to comply. This workshop provides
insight into why a child with special needs misbehaves and how changing
your behavior will in turn change theirs. Learn to recognize the
function of behavior and how a front-end approach will show results.
Functional Assessments, which are at the heart of a Positive Behavior
Support Plan, are discussed at length and sample plans are provided.
This workshop was created by Rebecca Goniwich, Barbara Gopen Memorial
Fellow, in collaboration with Federation For Children With Special
Needs. The program will be presented by Rebecca Goniwich, Co-Chair
Sudbury Special Education Advisory Council and will be held at the
Memorial Hall Library, Elm Square, Andover on Wednesday, February 13
from 7:00pm-9:00pm.
