[Apssan] Sanborn ELT update

Dear Members of the Sanborn Community,

 

As you are aware, Sanborn School was one of six Andover schools to
receive an Expanded Learning Time (ELT) Planning Grant from the
Massachusetts Department of Education.  This spring, our site-based team
which was comprised of six parents, five teachers, and the principal,
met regularly to explore the feasibility of Expanded Learning Time for
the Sanborn Community.  In addition to these meetings, we solicited your
input during our Parent Information Night and the Before and After
School Survey.

 

As a result of the information gathered from the above meetings our team
has recommended devoting another year to researching the feasibility of
ELT at Sanborn and communicating with our school community a more
detailed vision of what an Expanded School Day would look like.
Therefore, we will not be applying for an Implementation Grant this
July, but will be discussing over the coming year, whether to submit an
application in July 2009.

 

As we research the different facets of ELT over the coming year, your
participation is paramount.  We plan to do significant community
outreach via small group meetings and focus groups in an effort to not
only share information but to solicit your input. We will be forming
focus groups to begin in the fall. If you are interested in
participating, please contact the school office.

 

As a result of the work conducted by our site-based team, there will be
two enhancements made to our existing school day in September 08.
First, within the framework of our current school day, the master
schedule will be reviewed with the intent of providing teachers with
consistent blocks for literacy instruction.  Second, we will be
partnering with SHED/Kid's Club to expand the optional enrichment
offerings for our children through the before and after school
Explorations program.

 

The site-based team is in the process of outlining a preliminary
timeline for our next steps.  We will post this information to our
website as well as sending it via email.  As we move forward, please
feel free to contact any member of the ELT committee with your
