                                                  Basic Rights Workshop


 

 Attorney Matthew MacAvoy will speak about the basic legal rights of
children with disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act (IDEA).  The goal of Mr. MacAvoy's presentation is to
educate parents on the basic rights that protect children with special
needs as they progress through the school system.   

 

Matthew MacAvoy has specialized in disability law for the past thirteen
years.  He has served as a federal Mental Health Protection & Advocacy
attorney, an attorney for the Massachusetts Commission on Judicial
Conduct, and as a Hearing Officer with the Massachusetts Bureau of
Special Education Appeals.  Since leaving the Bureau of Special
Education Appeals, Attorney MacAvoy has maintained a successful private
practice providing representation in educational disputes throughout the
Commonwealth.

"BASKETS" - The Foundation for Children with Behavioral Challenges
(www.fcbcsupport.org <http://www.fcbcsupport.org/> ) is a parent led
group whose objective is to provide support for all caregivers
interested in expanding their repertoire of interventions for both
minimizing struggles with children and enhancing children's capacities
for flexibility, frustration tolerance, communication and
self-regulation. The group is based on the research and clinical
experience of Dr. Ross Greene, author of "The Explosive Child" and the
director of the Center for Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS
www.ccps.info <http://www.ccps.info/> ).

 

Meetings are held the first Monday evening of the month and the focus is
on providing education and support through presentations on pertinent
topics and networking

'USING VISUAL SUPPORTS TO INCREASE FLEXIBILITY AND REDUCE ANXIETY'

Speaker: Mary Kaminski, Med., Behavior Consultant, Melmark New England

Location: Temple Emanuel of Andover, 7 Haggetts Pond Road 

7:30-9:00 PM

 

Morning meetings are held Thursday mornings at alternate Andover
locations. RSVP's required for location and directions at
Beth at fcbcsupport.org. The focus of meeting is on providing support
through small group discussions on topics of interest, with emphasis on
building skill and confidence in implementing the Collaborative Problem
Solving Approach
