S.T.O.P. HAS BEGUN
West has adopted the S.T.O.P. model* (Stop Teasing Other People) Some of
the themes will be Tolerance, Respect, Inclusion, and Friendship. Today
we had a whole school assembly for grades 1-5 to explain the program.
Over the summer 12 teachers worked as a group to develop lessons that
can be incorporated into all areas of the curriculum. Each month the
children will participate in journal writing, readings, lessons, centers
and video assemblies that focus on the theme of the month. We hope to
have children create podcasts, plays and videos on each topic as well.
Believe It Achieve It is our September theme.

 

In addition, one Friday a month, the children will visit their "Friday
Families." This group will be comprised of children in kindergarten
through fifth grade that will meet with a classroom teacher and one to
two other adults. They will get to know one another and discuss some of
the monthly topics. We are hoping to create cross grade level
friendships and make the school even more friendly!  In addition, I met
with the Rotary Club and they would be thrilled to assign a monthly
guest readers to any classroom that should chose to participate. The
reader will share literature that will focus on our monthly theme. The
Rotary readers will bring the community aspect of S.T.O.P. into the
school and their involvement should greatly enhance our goal of getting
as many people involved in this initiative! The Rotarians also donated
almost $1,000 toward our S.T.O.P library! If you know a Rotarian thank
him/her!

 

Once on month we need a few parent volunteers 10:15-11:00 to direct our
youngest students to their family and to cover the office so our
secretaries may participate. If this is something you could assist in,
please e-mail lroos at aps1.net (YOU MUST HAVE A CORI ON FILE) We will
practice this next Friday!
