Dear Members of the West Elementary School Community,

 

With much enthusiasm I write to announce that I have appointed Ms.
Elizabeth Greene Roos Principal of West Elementary School.  She will
assume this position on July 1, 2008.  

 

As many of you know, Ms. Roos has served as Assistant Principal at West
Elementary for 13 years.  Before that she was a teacher at the school
for 11 years.  While Ms. Roos certainly knows the school and has been an
active part of the faculty and administration for a number of years, she
knew that her appointment to the position of principal was not a given.
As with all other searches, I was clear to the faculty and parents, as
well as to Ms. Roos, that I would appoint the most qualified person,
even if that person turned out to be someone other than Ms. Roos. As I
say with each search, there is no task I take more seriously than the
appointment of a principal.  The right principal is absolutely critical
to ensuring that our schools continue to grow and improve.  Throughout
the process I stressed that this was not about giving the job to someone
simply because she was a familiar face or because she "deserved" it.
Not every Assistant Principal makes a good Principal, and so I have not
appointed every internal candidate who has applied for a job.

 

Indeed, though the pool was not large, we had a number of strong
applicants, and the search committee, made up of faculty and parents,
named four excellent finalists, all of whom were highly qualified for
the position.  I interviewed the finalists and conducted site visits.
Just as I was making the decision to appoint Ms. Roos, I received a call
from one of the candidates who told me she had an offer from another
district.  I was pleased for her and happy I did not have to deliver
disappointing news to her.  We had outstanding applicants who were
sought by other schools, and that did not surprise me, given the
excellent reputation West Elementary enjoys, a reputation that goes well
beyond our district..........
