Dear Current and Future Wood Hill Parents/Guardians:
I hope you are all staying cool in this oppressive heat. Similar to the
weather, conversation regarding the pursuit of the Expanded Learning
Time grant have heated up. In order to prevent any misinformation from
swirling around, I wanted to give you an update:
*The ELT Team has met seven times to discuss and plan for the grant
application. The team members consist of teachers, parents, community
organization members, and administrators. All Topics and notes of
discussion are posted and can be accessed from the Wood Hill Home Page,
http://www.aps1.net/whm/ .
*We have had numerous team members attend planning sessions supported by
Mass 20/20 (mass2020.org) Team members have also visited schools
currently implementing an expanded learning day. Team members have also
met with community organizations who are currently running before and
after school programs.
*We have held a parent and teacher discussion and input sessions in
order to gather ideas, concerns, and questions. We will be posting the
answers to the questions formulated from the parent meeting in the near
future.
Currently, we are in the process of drafting a plan to submit to the
state. The plan is an initial application for the Expanded Learning
Time Grant, but in no way commits Wood Hill to moving forward with ELT.
The state will provide feedback and questions for us to respond to. If
important questions related to the improvement of student educational,
emotional, and social well-being cannot be resolved, we may choose to
withdraw from consideration. I am personally excited for the
possibility of what expanded time could bring to our students, but I
also understand the different levels of apprehension across our school
community. Our current (and predicted) economical and fiscal climate
compels us all to explore creative ways to continue to provide an
excellent educational experience for all of our children.
If you have any questions or concerns, please refer to the meeting notes
on the Wood Hill Home Page. If you have further interest or questions,
please contact me or any other member on the ELT planning team.
Sincerely,
Patrick Bucco
