Dear Parents & Guardians,
I know you are hearing a lot about ELT and some of you may have
questions about what it might mean for your children at High Plain
Elementary and Wood Hill Middle School. ELT stands for Expanded
Learning Time (not Extended Learning Time). We will be hosting a Parent
Informational Meeting on Tuesday, April 15th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Wood
Hill Auditorium.
Andover received a grant to fund the investigation of ELT for six
schools in our district. The costs associated with the planning process
are covered by the grant that we received this year. High Plain and
Wood Hill are looking at the possibility of whether ELT will be right
for our community. No decisions have been made yet. The ELT team,
which is composed of parents, teachers and administrators, is taking a
look at whether ELT makes sense for us. You will be asked to participate
in a survey so that you have input to this as well. At the end of this
investigation we will decide whether or not to continue with the
application process.
The school day has been the same for over one hundred years. While so
many other things have changed this has remained constant. We have a
very diverse population and we are trying to meet the needs of all of
our students. ELT funded schools can add approximately 300 hours to the
school year. Expanded Day does not just mean a longer day; it means a
smarter day. By expanding the day teachers could better support
differentiated instruction allowing more time for individualized
instruction. ELT allows more time for students to ask questions and get
answers. The teachers will have the opportunity for more professional
development time to develop lessons that help engage students in more
meaningful activities.
We are hoping that this letter gives you a basic understanding of the
current investigative process. We look forward to sharing more
information and hearing your feedback at our meeting to be held on April
15, 2008 at 7:00 pm in the Wood Hill Auditorium.
Sincerely,
The Wood Hill ELT Committee:
